The Living Room General A decade and nostalgia
THINQon is a platform for a more intelligent web. It aims to replace the ruling paradigm of the web – that of sharing and gathering information – with a sharing and achieving of understanding. A decade and nostalgia
The Zeros. The Os. What is this decade called? In a century from now it will be referenced as the turn of the century. But what about a year from now? The 9/11 decade? The years of abnormal weather patterning? What will be the most significant thing from this decade? I've heard jelly-fish are on the rise globally. In 50 years if jelly fish have evolved intelligence than I'm sure it'll be significant.

This is my first cognizant decade. Well, maturely cognizant. I was, in fact, present for all of the 90s, though my consciousness rarely extended beyond thoughts of candy and tree climbing. (I'm that guy who has one beer and climbs on top public fixtures.) In all likelihood 10 years from now we will all be nostalgic for this decade like I am right now for the 90s. (Cranberries, best band of all time of the 90s?)

So what should we be nostalgic for? What did this decade mean? I know I'm some months early, but why not beat VH1 to the punch? And also, pitchfork is in the middle of figuring out the best music of the decade and it is a fun sport, not as fun as lightpole climbing, but still of entertaining properties.

Is 9/11 going to be the defining historical moment do you think? Or might it be something under the radar, like a technological advancement? Maybe Michael Jackson dying?

Have you ever noticed that it's very hard to be nostalgic by yourself? I can think of a few things from this past decade that come to mind quickly, a few albums and songs and movies and shows, but without any responses I don't know if my brain will discover other ones. Scientology was a big deal, right? Who remembers Mark Foley? That was a fun week to read the news.

Have you ever met one of those chronically nostalgic people? Coincidentally they are chronically annoying as well. I don't need to see a youtube video of 1970's Las Vegas Parlor Music thank you. But it's fun to be nostalgic at times. Did anyone own a cell phone in 2000? Does anyone not own one now? Remember that Crazy Leprechaun who jumped on in the middle of the Olympic Marathon? Pixar has taken over the world with the help of a little fish and a robot.

How come when we are nostalgic we forget that things sucked too? If nostalgic means remembering the old good times, is there a word for remembering the bad times? The Tsunami, Katrina, 9/11, War and more war, the Patriot act, virginia tech, Heath Ledger died and no one uses beepers anymore.

Is this It? was an amazing album and Curb Your Enthusiasm is the best thing to happen to television since, well, since before I was cognizant. What are you all nostalgic for from this decade? Or what will you be nostalgic for in 10 years?
