Occupy the Internet
THINQon is a platform for a more intelligent web. It aims to replace the ruling paradigm of the web – that of sharing and gathering information – with a sharing and achieving of understanding. Instead of the Q&A model it offers an experience. A platform for discovery of ideas, people, and yourself.     Continue >

I'm a strong proponent of facts and there are situations in which you just can't do without them.  Even here on THINQon, where what we aim for, I hope, is intelligent conversation that is wide ranging and inclusive but:
without the burden of becoming a quasi news agency.

Another hope is that we're honest enough (of course we are) to make statements that are educated and well thought out even though the facts are not close to hand.

When a fact needs to be cited we're alert enough to know that we have to go dig for it and humble enough to accept criticism for leaving it out.

I like the conversation and the animated back and forth.
I like the hard truth but sometimes I also like to meander around it and see it from different directions...and speculate about it.
Fact free.

This is subject dependent of course.  Some lines of inquiry demand more facts than others.
However, THINQon is set up to be like a home--living rooms and family rooms and the like...

Discussion and thoughtful consideration and the occasional food fight.

I would like to cancel this post because it sounds ridiculous but I just can't make myself do it.  So I'm sending it out into the ether and I'll take my licks for it.

hehe.

I've been a bit obnoxious about calling for cited sources in posts recently.

I agree that speculation and judgment calls are necessary for a discussion to progress, but it is really nice to have a few clear, documented, hard facts that are available to everyone participating as a starting point. [citation needed]

Speaking of THINQon's living room... I often call for citations in my own. This does not endear me to everyone, but there's a whole internet at our fingertips! Surely there must be some information we can all share.

You're an accountant aren't you?  Joke...joke...., are you?
I've never been a numbers person.  Only as much as absolutely necessary--my bank account reflects that.
I tend to look at a situation for a while then I read around a bit and say, 'hey'.

I don't want THINQon to implode.  We're an interesting bunch.

Not quite an accountant, but I raise money for a nonprofit, so that does make me somewhat of an Excel spreadsheet jockey. However, my obsession with source citation is more attributable to my degree in History... I choose books on a given topic based largely on the number and quality of the endnotes.

I have noticed that many of the prolific pandas 'round these parts treat political topics from more of a literary (how aesthetically can I write about a topic) rather than an analytical bent. A classic conundrum of rhetoric.

Some favorite quotes of mine on the topic:

Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.
John Adams 'Argument in Defense of the Soldiers in the Boston Massacre Trials,' December 1770
US diplomat&politician (1735 - 1826)
Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.
