Can you feel the hate
http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/tue-january-5-2010-george-lucas
I dont even know how to say this.
I am kind of scared about living in this country.  I was watching the Daily Show with John Stewart and between the first and second commercial breaks I was more offended than I have ever been by national television.  There were three minutes of quotes from Fox News to the effect of:
"George Washington, OK, he prayed to God Almighty. He didn't pray to Muhammad."
"A moderate Islamic leader is an oxymoron."
"I'm sure, no offense to India... that one big river they have there, that sounds like a disease."
"If you are an 18-28 year old Muslim man, than you should be strip searched."

I'm not even Muslim.
But had they been talking about any other demographic I would have been equally upset.  I mean how ludicrous would any of those statements be if Muslim and Islam were replaced by any fat, or French, or Black, or any thing else for that matter.
Why is it acceptable to hold these opinions on national television?
Where is the outrage?
If we were talking about any other minority group, such as the Jews, not to be stereotypical, or Blacks, there would be a whirlwind of angry letters and violent emails directed at Fox.
I was under the impression that this was a country of religious freedom, not religious persecution.
There is just so much hate in this country.
The worrying thing, for me, is that my first, middle, and last name are all "Muslim".
How does that bode for me?
I wish I knew.

And when the USA is finally cleansed of the "Muslim threat", who is going to be the new scape goat for all Americas problems i wonder?
Profiling is bull shit, and blatant islamophobia and discrimination.
Hi Fiz,
Great and important topic.

My comment is divided into two parts.
First, about the quotes from the daily show. There are many nutcases in any country and the US is a BIG country. Can I really say that Fox network with a huge view-share is for nutcases?

In any case, whether they are nutcases or not, they don't just say these silly things about islam but about everything in the world. As you watch the daily show I'm sure you are aware of that.

Second, the hate. Yes, you feel the hate. One should comment though that this hate was manufactured by Al-Qaeda, and very much on purpose. In Israel for example the Hamas does what it can to starve the people, to cause Israel to stop delivering crude-oil, whatever it can to make its own citizens miserable. They don't do it because they hate their own citizens, nor only for international pressure. No, they do it because the consequence is that their citizens will hate Israel. They will hate Israel and they'll act, and then the Israelis will hate them and respond, or self-defense, (It doesn't matter for this topic who do you think started it, or who are the bad guys there) and vice versa. They create hatred and war.
(I don't mean to bring the who is right and wrong in Israel, or palestine, into the this, but the fact that the Hamas government is trying to hurt their own people is very well documented, and was also the case in Iraq and elsewhere.)

You feel the hate, you feel it, and after you will be mistreated enough because of it you will start to hate too. Like that the world moves to hatred and war, which is the ambition of Al-Qaeda, and they know what they are doing. They are succeeding. It's awful and sad but it's the case.

I'm not sure how this post came out. I was moved by your post and find it an important topic to discuss.
The post came out well, Roy.
I tried to reply yesterday but the subject is too big and too sad and I couldn't put fingers to keys.
When I consider how people are manipulated and tortured and terrified the world over I'm ashamed to be human.  This has been the way of power since the first animal was hatched.  Humans have refined it to a horrifying level.
Ignorance and helplessness lead to hate, a powerful emotion that can and is used to further agendas of governments, businesses, tribes, families...individuals...

More of us need to discuss this, I am completely confounded in the face of FOX News.

The best we can do, I think, is to refuse to hate and refuse to be afraid and to be glad there is a Daily Show to call the manipulators out and point to the lies.

Don't let them get to you, Fiz.  Refuse to hate and refuse to be afraid and keep on stepping.
Fiz-I've no doubt that if there had been no 9/11 the conservative reactionaries would find some other ethnic group to demonise-that's guaranteed.
But on the subject of strip searching Muslim men of a certain age and racial profiling....
I'm Irish-when I was a teenager the I.R.A waged ongoing bomb attacks in England-hotels,bars,anywhere-many people died and were maimed over 30 years.
When ever we Irish travelled to England we were searched-sometimes strip searched-often held overnight-frequently beaten-sometimes jailed on phony evidence and in Belfast, courts without juries-more than 99%of Irish people didn't do these things BUT a certain percentage of Irish people condoned these things by their silence and ambiguity and ALL of the bombers WERE Irish-so the British authorities DIDN'T stop Muslims entering England or didn't question them-they racially profiled the Irish(as all the bombers were Irish)-at that time there were more than a million Muslims in England-I dont think a single one ever objected to the 99% plus innocent Irish being profiled-and as more than a million Irish had families in England travel was often essential-so whatever about the wicked FOX network-the men and women in law enforcement are simply doing their jobs.
