Bedroom General Does intense intimacy terrify most men?

Does intense intimacy terrify most men?
Are men so fearful of going to "that place" with a woman that they will opt out of a true love-relationship, and settle
for something more comfortable, but less emotionally invasive? Is it equal between the sexes or is it just a "people"
thing that intense vulnerability to a lover is scarey? Does aging affect this? Does true love ever die?
My sense is that in general the point at which men shy away from intimacy comes sooner than with women. But most people have their limit, so that I think women, too, will move away from a relationship with a man who goes beyond their "maximum intimacy depth." Men and women seem to have inverse complaints about each other: men can be uncomfortable with intimacy, but then long for it (or not :-)); simultaneously, women might wish for intimacy, but then be turned off by men who provide it.

I imagine this same dynamic exists in same-sex relationships, but I wonder if in general they find their level more readily. My own casual experience suggests this is the case, but there is plenty of reason to doubt my experience.

Well, according to the general concensus so far, I must be the 'odd man out'.  After my first marriage ended I dated for several years, and in any relationship that went on for any length of time it was usually the woman who broke it off or resisted the intimacy.  Now I am answering sort of generally as I am not exactly sure what the OP means by "That Place" a more specific definition would help.  I know that there are a lot of people who will use a phrase like this and then just 'assume' that everyone knows exactly what they mean.  Please help the dummy by being a bit more specific, thanks.
