The Living Room General Graciousness on THINQon
THINQon is a platform for a more intelligent web. It aims to replace the ruling paradigm of the web – that of sharing and gathering information – with a sharing and achieving of understanding. Instead of the Q&A model it offers an experience. A platform for discovery of ideas, people, and yourself.     Continue >
Graciousness on THINQon
I’ve noticed how gracious some of our members are.  When disagreeing these few stay dignified and kind, yet strong.  Me, on the other hand…  I believe that I come off as antagonistic even when that’s not even close to my intention.  I don’t do that in person.  It seems that the women here have more talent in expressing graciousness than do the men.

So, how do you gracious ones do it?
I don't think it is a female thing, I've noticed several men who articulately responded to some posts where I would have just said something like 'Listen, moron...' or just stormed off if it were a face to face!  I'll go back and check out who precisely impressed me so much that I'm still thinking about the form rather than the content of a post.

Postscript (October 9, 2010 at 11:05 AM):
The people I just mentioned:  Arthur Mont, in answer to 'What it means to discuss things intelligently'; Paul Caubet, in the same post; Marcus Ratliff in 'Elegance is Refusal' made me see something differently; Chris Utterman in several posts shows intelligent sensitivity.  Apologies to several non-quoted!  But actually, in retrospect, what I do notice is a kinder answer from men to women as opposed to how women react to women.  That seems like a new topic in itself.

"what I do notice is a kinder answer from men to women as opposed to how women react to women"  If this is so it is peculiar to THINQon!  Every other debating place I have found on the internet is much less "civilised" and the men among them tend to be carnivores, and cannibals at that!    Just take a peep at the "debate" happening at http://www.alternet.org/  ...  There is little civility in that place, and the worst of them are the men ... in fact, there are precious few women contributors at that place, which leads me to suppose many of the men are there just for machismo punch-ups.
I discovered when I was very young that I responded  better and learned more from teachers who shared their knowledge wholeheartedly.
Teachers who, when I spoke from the callowness of youth, would make a suggestion or give me a sensible alternative opinion that I obviously hadn't considered (or heard of ).
Youth just doesn't know yet and that's all right.
It's their job to keep learning and to acquire experience.
Most of them will and they will be gracious and generous teachers.
Like every one of you, my good friends here on THINQon.
