How can you appraise your real progress? Or digression?
How can you appraise your real progress?
It is a general question I really wonder about. In all the fields I know, I witness that progress is never a continual line up. It's always a combination of steps moving forward with steps going backwards. It's rarely only the going forward steps. My question is how can you see the difference between a slow progress with its up and downs (while you're in a back step position), and a real digression?
I feel it's important to be able to catch the digression in time and change the direction, but sometimes a little digression is part of a greater progress and even serves the progress in a sense. Any thoughts on progress and digression?
When I am fully engaged in some pursuit, I sense intuitively whether a particular thing seems to be bringing me toward or away from my goal. What I call digressions are usually those things whose connection to my goal isn't immediately--or, perhaps ever--clear. But I don't find anything truly unrelated. Sometimes, though, I realize that my goal isn't what I thought it was.
