How to overcome one's fears
I have so many fears it's ridiculous. Some I'm better with but many are as strong as they ever were. What techniques would you recommend to overcome one's fears?

(I noticed the discussion on Is it important to face our fears? but for me it is.)
I'd love to help here somehow, Virginia, but your question isn't well enough defined to be approached.
Can you narrow it down a little?
What is the fear? If you don't want to say, then is it a big crippling one or a little 'ick' one.
Is it stopping you from doing what you want?
Do you get physical symptoms?
Can you stop thinking about it?

How severe is it and is it something that you can do something about?
There are people who are afraid of the yeti or asteroids--they're different than people who are afraid of public events or doctor's appointments.

Sometimes its really a good thing to be afraid of something.

Clarify if you can.

In response to Linda OReilly
Hi Linda,
I kept it general on purpose. I'm afraid of many things, from spiders to heights, I have a friend who is afraid of chickens though as far as I know she has never been on a farm, another friend is afraid of food which isn't firm (Jello makes him quiver), yet another is terrified of pigeons, etc. All somewhat insignificant, in the grand scheme of things, but annoying. I don't like being afraid of spiders and have become better at it. There is further a discussion here on a fear from having things stolen, but I didn't feel it was general enough to all the many small fears we all have.

I was thinking of whether to open this general topic and then each fear as a subtopic, but it seemed to me that it would work better with having first a somewhat general discussion, with examples of many different fears and how to overcome them, and only then further discussions delving into the specific fear.

You ask: "What is the fear? If you don't want to say, then is it a big crippling one or a little 'ick' one." - I guess I'm thinking of little 'ick' ones, but they are crippling in small ways. Some people, though not me, have a fear of flying. Perhaps we should have them in mind too.
There are so many fears and I think there is much to gain in seeing how someone overcame a fear of snakes, even for a person who is only afraid of rats.

(If you want to know the history of thinking about this: Two days ago when walking to my apartment I saw a huge cockroach. I went in but the cockroach was so big that I felt I had to immediately lock the door as it might knock it down. I still remembered the sensation yesterday and I started to think about this feeling of fear, which for me changed quickly to thinking of fear in general.)
Jello makes him quiver...Virginia, you get by on your sense of humor don't you?
I have a friend who feels that way about egg whites...

Little fears are terrible, they've got us surrounded.
I don't have too many fears left and if one annoys me I just laugh at it.  But that's probably because I'm old and I've gotten through all the fears of youth and middle age.  Only death remains and oddly that doesn't scare me either--not yet anyway.

I do remember thinking once, that I'd stopped having nightmares about monsters in my closet when I was old enough to have a mortgage.
Now all my mortgages are paid.

There was a time when I had a really big fear but I was too busy to dwell on it most of the time.

As you can see, I don't have any answer for you.  I dealt with my fears-or not-as they came along and I did that mostly by living through them.
Maybe that's what we all end up doing.
