Hi Linda,
I think I know which thread you mean. Actually before I posted I did some
searches on "immortality" to see whether the topic has been actually
discussed before.
There were some very interesting and profound ideas in it. With this new post I
just wanted to question the whole concept of immortality and why we are so
obsessed with it if it is actually the very thing that would doom us all.
In my opinion
humankind can be seen as a parasite which feeds on the resources provided by
the planet we live on. Still this parasite itself and thus humanity is immortal. We
can give birth to new life by having children thus creating new cells which
replace the old or dying ones in the body which is actually humanity itself.
When we place our own interests above the ones of the human kind we actually
diminish the chances of humanity’s survival.
I have
often heard young people express opinions like: “I wan’t to live my life to its
fullest. Meeting people having fun, going to parties. Why work and struggle.”
To me immortality is achievable by almost
everybody but it is a different kind of immortality the one which arises from
creating ideas or doing work that benefits human kind in some way. This ideas
and the work we have done while being alive never vanish – they are part of the
nutrition the organism called humanity needs in order to grow and prosper. In
my opinion almost everybody who has worked had enough can claim that he or she
is immortal.
It's a shame that many people don't understand that self-realization and satisfaction come as much from work as from play, as long as the work derives from our individual talents and drives and provides the community a valued resource.
