Katy Perry's mistake
Hi,
I've just seen Katy Perry Hot n' Cold video clip, and wanted to turn your attention to something funny about it.
It's an ok song, whatever, and a nice clip which really gives the sense of motion to the song. There is a small problem though - the end of the clip. The end of the clip, in a twist, makes the whole clip the guy's dream. On the other hand, the words of the song are definitely the girl's, and thus it makes no sense.
The way to solve this is to say it's his dream we see, while hearing her thoughts in the meantime. It's quite strange, and I'm sure they didn't think of that. Simply a case of having an idea for a clip, and an idea for an end to the clip, which simply doesn't make sense with the song. No biggie, as people don't notice these things, but the producers disrespect of the audience is what I find annoying here. As long as the audience will bite,
Yes, like you probably, I don't care either whether the clip makes sense. But,  besides the funny part, their total irrespect to making sense, and not in a smart way, simply from laziness and assumption of their audience as dumb, annoys me a bit.

Oh, and for the people in youtube wondering about the Zebra - I would assume it's both to exaplin it was a dream (a common method) and to be a metaphor to how he constantly changes his mind, black and white. It's a nice clip actually, an ok song, but again, the problem is the juxtaposition of both of them and making sense.

I don't think that producers are trying to disrespect the public. I think they themselves are not very bright if it makes sense to them. They are trying to come up fast with something catchy, not necessarily something that's thought through from beginning to end, but something that will sell and get a lot of attention quickly.  There's a lot of stupid crap out there in terms of words not making sense, facts used in wrong ways and conflicting storylines in  pop music and hollywood movies, and when I see something not making sense, it usually annoys me too. However, if I like music more than words, I would filter out the latter, and just listen to the music and disregard the part that doesn't really makes sense to me, or if I really like the piece, I will try to make sense of it, just for my own sake. I guess, it's more about appealing to the heart than the brain.

The music industry, as well as the movie industry have become very sloppy, and I don't think that the producers are trying to be maliciously disrespecting the audience, I think they themselves are shallow for thinking that the audience will eat everything and not question the meaning. Lately, it's more about superficiality than depth, as sad as it may be. I don't think producers are to blaim, because if something sells, they know they hit something, and that's how they make their assumptions, because they are in business for the money. And as we know, a lot of shit sells nowadays (I'm talking more about movie industry than the music one).
It certainly seems that many things are becoming more shallow and more arbitrary. On a similar note, I remember reading about new technology which would allow the full matrix of flavors produced when one bites into a lamb chop with mint to be condensed into a small chemical which would be sprinkled on potato chips; eating the chip, one would have the full "surround sound" experience of lamb and mint and potatoes in one's mouth. I'm very happy with CD technology, but I find the food analogue depressing and unsettling. Wouldn't the original be more satisfying? I feel that I am in the minority in thinking so.
Hi Anastasis,
I didn't mean it that they are maliciously doing something to disrespect the public. I pretty much agree with what you say: "they have become very sloppy" and as long as it makes money what do they care.

I don't care at all if the words of the song make sense as long as it sounds nice. If they do it's a nice bonus and makes the song more interesting, but if they don't they don't. I can still like the song. But in movies, and hence in clips which try to be mini-movies, it annoys me more. I think you are being nice when you say that they are shallow and it makes sense to them. Maybe, but I think mostly, like you say, they don't care at all if it makes sense as long as it sells. And the public also doesn't care and are very happy to buy complete stupidity. I remember seeing Charlie's Angels (the movie) and being amazed how they dared to do such a movie. It was extremely successful in the box office so obviously people didn't share my annoyance. I think there used to be a time when even if people would gladly pay for eating shit the people who supplied the food felt some responsibility to do something better.
This change to not care as long as people are willing to pay for it is not a minute change but a major one. Are the public to blame - they can only compare to other things they know and as long as they don't have a good measuring stick they accept everything is good (see post ). They are not taught to care if a movie makes sense and then they don't.
