OK, I scanned most of that discussion you linked to, but I don't think it dealt with the moral dilemma facing vegetarians and non-vegetarians : namely, the exploitation and killing of animals for human benefit.
Even if one accepts that animals are an inferior species, shouldn't people care more about the way abattoirs operate? I know most of us would prefer not to think about this grisly subject, but I feel it should be discussed, given that neither pre-stunning nor ritual slaughter can totally avoid animal suffering. Can one be kind to animals and ignore their sordid departure from this world?
I accept that animals should be raised in captivity, fed, and finally slaughtered for our comfort, but it should all be done as humanely as possible. Industrial food technology and the humane treatment of animals are not incompatible. Unfortunately, people mostly don't want to know what is involved in this whole process especially when it comes to the animals and their final destination. I would be surprised if this topic is of interest to this forum.
I think what is essential is to make sure that the animals meet a speedy and painless death in a humane way, as far as possible. Maybe we need more vets and hygiene inspectors to be present in the slaughterhouses?
