Making small talk

I am terrible at small talk. When everyone else was in line getting instructions on how to chat up perfect strangers, I must have been off by myself climbing trees. This is especially embarrassing for a girl, we are supposed to intuitively know how to keep dinner table conversation flowing.

Can anybody give me basic tips? Remedial instructions? Ideas?
