Hi Linda,
I hadn’t heard of Christopher Hitchens before, but looked him up because of your regard for him. I still know next to nothing about him, but I do know something about the far left’s relationship to the Neo-cons. He wasn’t the only one to switch sides.
I’m just going from memory, so details could be wrong, but the gist of it is that a group within the Left had become disillusioned with the direction the movement was taking. These were the far left, far left, radical, perhaps almost Stalinists. They included Irving Kristol, Jean Kilpatrick, and others, and came under the influence of Strauss the anthropologist at the University of Chicago and unified behind the Republican party, circa Goldwater I believe.
My take on it is that they thought society needed strong, top down order to keep the masses controlled. I believe they saw their opportunity in the corporate world. If everything became exceedingly dependent upon the economy it would be the same as dependency on the State. Under the guise of Nationalism they steered all advantage to the business world.
If all that is true, how shocking. It would mean that the parties have essentially switched sides! The far Right would actually take the role they ascribe to their nemesis the Communists! That’s fascinating isn’t it?
I learned all that from videos I received from donating to KPFA, the public radio station in Berkley. BBC published the videos. I can find the titles if you’re interested.
I'd like that, Ted, thanks.
I'm interested in Hitchen's views and for the most part I know them but he can come at an issue from an angle I never would have considered and then I have to re-read and re-check and re-think...its exhausting!
His brain works in startling ways and even though he doesn't always win me over I've got to stand back and grin at the chutzpah of the man.
He just won't let anyone take the easy way out--not even himself.
I need smart, abrasive people to challenge me and push me. Hitch knows how to challenge and push.
I couldn't go a single round with him.
But I can dream...
