What are the possibilities in creating nonlinear music?
I am reading at the moment a comic book, Wathcmen, and in the reading group the topic of how time operates differently in film, literature, painting, and comic books came up (
post). Comic books allow time not to simply be nonlinear, but also, as William notes in
post "Even when the reader follows the panels in order, there is no fixed
relation between a unit of space (the panel) and a unit of time."
What then are the possibilities in music?
Music always expands and contracts time, but is there any way to make music nonlinear? To have a story unfold in bits and pieces only to be put together at the end. Is there a possibility for simultaneity?
I think this question goes deeper than purely a question about music. Music, I would say, represents our emotions, and the way our emotions can change with time. Can our emotions change in a non-linear way? We seem to be stuck always inside time so the answer would seem to be negative, on the face of it, but then if music is capable of showing it...?
