Obama and Gay Marriage

Some disappointing actions by Obama's justice department last week. As a candidate Obama spoke harshly of the Defense of Marriage Act.

  1. No state needs to treat a relationship between persons of the same sex as a marriage, even if the relationship is considered a marriage in another state.
  2. The federal government defines marriage as a legal union exclusively between one man and one woman.
If it is a state issue why does the federal government need a definition of marriage? This act prohibits legally married gay couples the access to federal benefits from marriage.

Last week the Justice Department defended the Act. They suggested it actually saves U.S. Taxpayer money. Obama has not commented. It's disappointing that Obama isn't being more steadfast to the promises he made during the campaign. It's understandable that he has other things on his plate right now, but this act should have been repealed last week. There is a possibility that he can do it later of course, which is his plan for Don't Ask Don't Tell, but why wouldn't he do it when the opportunity was there? His position on Don't Ask Don't Tell is also an issue. He says he has put it to the side until he can work it out with the joint chiefs of staff with a projected decision set for 2010. But until then, his justice department is defending Don't Ask Don't Tell in court. If you regard something unconstitutional or morally wrong, you shouldn't defend it.

Oy! Politics... It hurts my brain

It's all just so troublesome
It seems everyone in the US is extremely disappointed by Obama, while abroad he is still the great big hope. Arabs, Israelis, Europeans, Africans, everyone loves him and hopes he will solve their problems. It sounds good, but he doesn't seem to be doing a very good job here in the US.

I don't mind him spending a lot of money, as I trust him more than I do any of his detractors. But I do mind him appointing people straight from the RIAA to the justice system, and having them control his schedule (like sending him to tell spain they should stop file sharers when there seems to be a bit more urgent things for the president to take care of). He seems to be controlled by the media moguls who helped him rise, and appointing his donors as ambassadors.

Not supporting the gay community he promised to support is merely one of his many disappointments. Why delay by a year? It's comfortable for him not to battle the right on this topic at the moment, but what is he battling for?
