On the relation between life, emotions and fundamental artistic techniques
Hi all,
I had an interesting experience last night that I wanted to share with you.
I made a small experiment with my piano teacher.
He had explained to me how to do simply just one sound, one beautiful sound on the piano. He explained to me how the movement of the arm has to come from inside, passing by your back, your shoulders, your arm and finally the finger, that it had to be attacked gently to give it its direction and intensity but then relaxed immediately after to let the sound grow, he explained to me that anyway once the pressure is made, there nothing more you can do anymore, you either made it good or not. Once you have let the sound grow you can start to prepare for the next one.
I was so surprised to hear (once more) the words of my old dance teacher in his mouth. Therefore I wanted to see whether, as he's an excellent pianist, whether he would be a good dancer. He's not dancing at all by the way. So I asked him to imagine that I was the piano, and that he should do the most beautiful sound ever, by guiding me and  making me walk back one step. An example of this movement is in the attached video  (the first 20 sec.). And the guiding movement he did was just perfect, and I can tell you this was not trivial. I was really impressed.

Last night I was thinking about it and I tried to find other examples of the same technique, I suppose that a violinist will have to do the same kind of movement with the bow, that a painter also will paint a line also with a similar technique...
Then I thought that life is also mostly like this; raising a child for example is just like this, you give impulses in a certain direction, you have to push him gently but strong enough so that he takes off but then you have to let the impulse grow in him and then start with another impulse. You can even start multiple impulses at once, but with a certain hierarchy of strength otherwise he would get lost... The ensemble of the impulses you (and others) give him and that grow in him, in combination with the original material (his ADN ) defines his person in the end.  Isn't this a wonderful concerto ?
Isn't love like this as well, without he right impulse there is no love, if you don't let it grow, there is no love either rather only a succession of adrenaline and dopamine shots. If you don't provide new impulses, the love will slowly vanish as the sound would do.

Finally I was amazed that when you imagine the feeling you want to have and then play it in the piano, the sounds just comes out as you wanted it. I guess as humans have made pianos, violins, brushes.. they made them to reflect their emotions, their life so that when they felt a certain way they adjusted the sound produced so it would be as they would expect it to be... I must say, I don't know, this is a mystery to me.

I would be curious to know your thoughts about his or shared experience.
Claire, your post is really beautiful! Simple, poetic and true.. It's full of freshness and depth .  I feel you touch something essential . I can not say more, I'd be too afraid to break the spell ...
