Oscar 2009 chatter
Can you believe how Faye Dunaway looked?  She is 68 years old and looked amazing. I saw her about 20 years ago and she looked amazing then, but still, it's quite a feat of medicine. I barely recognized her, and she obviously went through quite a bit of work. It's not just her though, there were many older actresses which I admire who came, and all looked to have quite a bit of work done. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's great that they can now feel so comfortable going out, and it's not like it used to be like that, so that's a big improvement, but at what cost?
Nice point -- and because of the discussion title, I guess you won't mind if I chime in with something unrelated.  The speeches have been pretty sedate so far, I think (though the show isn't over yet).  Nobody even seems very surprised or delighted to win; the only moment I'm likely to remember is this one:

"Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto" indeed.

Also, am I the only one who thought the musical medley (written by Baz Luhrmann) was a mess?  Having seen an opera that Luhrmann directed, I'm sure he can do better; what happened?
Hey,
I just saw that Valse with Bashir didn't win best foreign film. I am very disappointed about this. It is really one of the best films I've seen in a while, and though that's far from meaning an Oscar, it did seem to have a very good chance. It matters of course because it means a lot less people will see it, which is a shame.I found the movie very moving and intelligent.
A deep movie.

I also noticed Faye Dunaway, quite amazing, but missed the medley.
Hugh- If it's any consolation, Waltz with Bashir is in release right now in the US (and has gotten a lot of buzz in the film-loving community for some time), whereas Okuribito, which won the foreign film Oscar, has no US distributor, as far as I know.  In any case I'm not sure that this award usually has a very great effect on audience attendance except in sometimes helping to secure a release – one of many ways in which the foreign film category is peculiar.
