The Great Disruption
This from Tom Friedman in the NYT:

What do you think?
I think Tom Friedman is overrated, that's what I think.

I agree though that this decade is not looking too bright so far, what with the severe economic crises, the nuclear disaster in Japan, the Arab world in turmoil,
the mullahs in Iran on the verge of acquiring nukes - did I leave anything out ? The big question is what to do about it apart from worrying...
I think many are overrated but until someone walks to the edge of the precipice none know the precipice exists,

If you think of the earth as a petri dish and man as the microbes in it, multiplying exponentially, what happens when the petri dish overflows?  In a lab experiment you wipe up the spill.  The trouble is that earth is not an experiment in a lab.  Or is it?

In response to John barri
My initial response to Linda was a bit flippant as I'd merely skimmed Friedman's article. By overrated, I was thinking mainly of his insights regarding the Middle East conflicts.

As far as the world's overpopulation, and our destruction of the planet goes, I admit to not having enough information in order to make a meaningful comment.
Obviously it's a big worry.  One's tempted to say : après nous le déluge &  carpe diem because as individuals we tend to feel  fatalistic and powerless about the future.
Another reaction would be to do some online research and then debate the issues here on THINQon as well as other talk forums.

As a newcomer to this forum, I'll just wait and see.
