There is a growing controversy regarding some crazy priest wish to burn some books, which just so happen to be Korans. I find it ironic to juxtapose this case and the
ground zero mosque case. In the latter everyone in the news was speaking of how great this country is and how we protect our freedom and it's important to allow this mosque to be built to keep our American values, while in former case the American values, per another strange Obama speech (
post) is all of a sudden against the possibility of burning books. Now I'm not usually for burning books, and certainly not religious books, but we have fought for the right to burn the flag (or is that actually still outlawed? In any case most people on the left would say it shouldn't be.), and for the right to mock Jesus and whatever else we want to say as long as it isn't incendiary (pun-intended).
I worry about the growing trend of kowtowing to radical Islam. There was the famous case of a SouthPark episode being censored and re-censored because of a criticism of a censorship in showing the image of Muhammad, which all of a sudden all news agencies accept for fear of reprisal. I'm not blaming any of them for their kowtowing as I would probably do the same. Who wants to live like Salman Rushdie the rest of their lives? But for the president of the USA, supposedly an empire even if currently seeming like a mouse, to speak against the possibility of this burning because of the possible harm it might bring is despicable! If it was a Western, and the bad guys would demand turning the hostage over or innocent people would be hurt, well, we now know what Obama would say - Hand him over.
Yes, Obama is aware the priest has this right to burn books he only thinks he shouldn't be burning these books, but to come out and speak strongly against this burning is cowardly, especially giving the reasons of how innocent people will be hurt by this action. It's some crazy nut burning books, and we want to keep this right.
Let me make myself clear, I'm against burning books, whether they are the Bible, The New Testament, The Koran, The Iliad, or Harry Potter. Books should not be burnt. But I'm very much for the right of people to burn books - as long as it's not a rare copy or one's which will be missed by society. That is, I wouldn't allow all copies of the Koran to be burnt, but just some arbitrary copies - why not?
Look, if someone wants to spit on a cross I wouldn't like it, I would find it despicable, but I wouldn't want this right to be taken away from him or her due to fear of reprisal.
We have fought long and hard for these rights, and the American way is to allow for the burning of the books, as it is to allow the burning of the flag. (Of course the sides which support one may not be the same sides which support the other).
More than anything, I disliked Obama's reasoning.
Oh, and of course it's a Zionistic plot as the Iranian and Pakistanis immediately describe it as.
