I'm planning for travel. Long Term travel through all types of cities and places. I am mostly prepared (mentally) but was hoping for some suggestions as to what I should take with me.

In particular I am looking for reliable (but still affordable) brands. I need a jacket. What I have in mind is something that can double as a windbreaker but also give some warmth. I need hiking boots that won't fall apart after a month and a good bookbag reliable for hiking and daytripping.

Apart from those do any of you seasoned frugal travelers have any suggestions about what I should take with me? For specificity, I'm heading towards South America, but beyond that elsewhere as well.

I traveled for two years in Africa about 20 years ago: i got robbed once and ended up traveling much lighter.

You would be surprised what you can do without.

And you will be able to buy things as you travel.

I know I'm not much help but ....

Enjoy
Visit http://www.mec.ca they have everything you would need and are probably North Americas most environmentally friendly retailer. At least there travel section will give you some good ideas
When I went to India I took few clothes and bought tee shirts and Indian women's pants with tunics outfits. I mailed them home to a friend (and asked her to wash them) toward the end of my three week trip. (I also sent her presents for her two grandsons.) Wheeled suitcases are great. I bought a long coat and a jacket in Tibet and also mailed these home. Those plastic bags that you zip your clothes into, and then press theair out of are also very helpful. I like buying local clothes where I travel. They make the best souvenirs.
