Occupy the Internet
THINQon is a platform for a more intelligent web. It aims to replace the ruling paradigm of the web – that of sharing and gathering information – with a sharing and achieving of understanding. Instead of the Q&A model it offers an experience. A platform for discovery of ideas, people, and yourself.     Continue >
Watchmen - Reading group
Hi, I want to start a reading group on Watchmen. I lately saw Watchmen the movie and found it very impressive and smart. Reading also Jonathan Clark's interesting post , and considering its raised questions of society relation to violence, I thought it would be a good book to discuss.
It's not a book I would usually read as I never read any comic-book (graphic novel), but it is considered the Citizen Kane of comic books, and from a quick look it looked very interesting. I'll also mention that William is starting to organize a reading group on de Beauvoir's The Second Sex (post) Which will probably also start in a couple weeks.

For now, it seems the best is to simply have it as a running topic, each person responding whenever, with maybe adding a specific time for a meeting later.

(I am aware of the presumptions regarding graphic novels but hope many people will join anyway to try and see. I am not completely free from those presumptions myself, or at least until this book.)

Technicalities:
I'll start  subtopics for each section, so one can read and respond to them without spoilers. Please keep your comments specifically to that, and previous, chapters without revealing anything from the future. For a general discussion of the book, we can continue in this topic, without spoilers. There will also be a subtopic for a discussion of the complete book with spoilers allowed.

As everyone is using the same edition (with regards paging at least), we can just refer to page numbers.
1-12 would mean chapter 1, page 12. We can add a box number,  starting counting from the top left.
And, off we go.

Just in case people don't notice the link at the end of the page, here starts the discussion on Chapter 1 .

Chapter 2
Books Discussed
Watchmen
by Dave Gibbons Alan Moore

My first general comment is how strange it is to read a graphic novel. I read cartoons, but this is very different. If I haven't seen the film I wouldn't understand much as I tend to jump around the boxes which are just images without words. I remember the first time I went to an opera I talked to my parents during the music parts as it didn't seem anything was happening when they weren't speaking.
It is strange then to notice now the images as part of the story. I can already say it reminds me also of looking at painting, even the effect of the text brushes against the effect of painting.

(Oh, and I always read very very slowly, so I'll advance very slowly here. Apologies in advance for not immediately responding to the faster readers.)
