When animals are too human
There have been a number of discussions about human traits in animals (melody, rhythm, lies), so here's a sad story for you folks. Santino the chimp "has challenged scientists' beliefs about human beings" by stockpiling stones in advance of visitors' arrival at the zoo so that he can throw the stones quickly when agitated. (It's not clear that anyone is actually being harmed.)

Cognitive scientist Osvath is quoted as saying:
"Forward planning like this is supposed to be uniquely human; it implies a consciousness that is very special, that you can close your eyes you can see this inner world."

What did the zookeepers do? They castrated him so that he would not be so aggressive.
Well, so much for science. I'll leave the politics out of it.

I am nonetheless surprised that this forward thinking is so unique. Surely other animals plan ahead. Do we really believe that the migration comes as a total shock to the geese each year?
